M. K. ČIURLIONIS CONCERT CENTRE IN KAUNAS

Symbolic time capsule buried at construction site of M. K. Čiurlionis Concert Center

In Kaunas, on the left bank of the Nemunas River, near the new pedestrian and bicycle bridge currently under construction, the start of construction on the M. K. Čiurlionis Concert Center was marked on Thursday with the symbolic burial of a time capsule. This state-level venue dedicated to world-class classical music will not only open up a scenic panorama of the area but will also become another important point of attraction.

The project of M. K. Čiurlionis Concert Center was developed by a joint team of “Paleko archstudija” and BE LIVE group company Baltic Engineers.

A symbolic time capsule was buried.

“I believe you will agree that Kaunas and its residents deserve Čiurlionis Concert Centre. This very weekend we will be celebrating the city’s birthday. I cannot think of a better gift than this. It will be yet another source of pride for the city and its calling card — a place where music, architecture, creativity and community come together.”

Kaunas has once again proven that it is capable of carrying out ambitious projects. I believe that this concert hall will be more than just a building. The name Čiurlionis itself demands it. It represents the heights of creativity, vision and the courage to see the bigger picture. World-class music will be performed here, new talents will grow and Kaunas will strengthen its position as a city of culture,” said Kaunas Mayor Visvaldas Matijošaitis during the capsule‑burring ceremony.

It will serve more than one generation

The project of M. K. Čiurlionis Concert Center was developed by a joint team of  “Paleko archstudija” and BE LIVE group company Baltic Engineers. Led by Rolandas Palekas, laureate of the Lithuanian National Culture and Arts Award, the team of architects and experienced general designers brought together a wide range of creative experts: architects, engineers, hydrologists, hydraulic engineers, as well as acoustics specialists.

It will stand out for its architectural solutions

R. Palekas, delivering his congratulatory remarks, expressed confidence that the new concert centre will serve many generations to come.

“It is a great honour for me to contribute to the beginning, to the birth, of this unique building. All of us will do our utmost, and even more, to ensure that this structure is brought to life flawlessly,” the architect said.

Darius Kvedaras, head of the “BE LIVE” group of companies, agreed to these statements: “The building will be a true adornment of Žemoji Freda. The city’s proximity to water is an advantage, but for us engineers, it is a challenge. The entire design team has been working responsibly and consistently since 2021. Both architects and engineers approached the creation of building’s design with great responsibility. All issues that arose along the way have been successfully resolved.”

A glass-enclosed building with an A++ energy efficiency-class, standing 25 meters tall and spanning nearly 23,000 square meters of total floor space, is under construction on a plot of more than 4 hectares in Žemoji Freda, at 31 H. O. Minkovskių Street.

This unique building will house two modern halls. The main hall will seat about 1,500 spectators and will be designed for classical music concerts, operettas and other performances requiring natural acoustics. The second is a multifunctional space with a view of the Nemunas River and nearly 700 seats. Its acoustic properties will be adjustable, making it suitable for concerts, conferences, exhibitions and various other events.

The transparent, undulating façade of the building will mirror the reflections of the river’s water. From inside, visitors will enjoy a vivid view of the iconic Kaunas Old Town landscape and the picturesque panorama framed by the flow of the Nemunas River.

A cozy marina for small boats is also planned next to the building. In addition, the underground parking facility will serve as a shelter.

Construction of M. K. Čiurlionis Concert Centre is expected to be completed within three years. The value of the works amounts to 76 million euros including VAT.
